It is a day after the dust settled in Beijing following the 60th anniversary parade. This Miao village tucked into the side of a mountain in the Qiandongnan Miao and Tong Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou seems unperturbed by the festivities. Guizhou is one of China’s most underdeveloped provinces and its largest minority population—the Miao—used to have a shaky relationship with the Qing Dynasty government.

This Miao village has been undergoing a slow hygiene transformation as a result of collaboration between Oxfam Hong Kong and the local government. New toilets with showers have been installed across the village as an effort to encourage healthy habits. Most villagers believe that a rich business man from Hong Kong donated the toilets.
